A warm, but fortuitously rather cloudy, Saturday morning saw a wonderful group of volunteers turn up for probably the most challenging job of the past year. Right of way 178/21/1 – or the path on the south side of the canal that leads from the Hook Road, behind the Whitewater Estate, to the Deer Park (see map) – was looking like something more usually found in the jungles of Borneo: an impenetrable morass of vegetation that was mostly spiky or sting-y.
Up stepped Jenny, Colin, Simon, Ryan, and, armed with some pretty nifty heavy metal, Mike, Peter and John M – yes, we are now getting overly impressed by battery powered garden equipment…… Two and a half hours of solid graft, and the difference is astonishing! You can now walk through a beautifully clear pathway without being viciously attacked (for the most part) by lurking vegetation…
This was genuinely a herculean effort and the team refused to stop at the allotted 2 hours, determined as they were to finish what they had started. A wonderful job, guys, thank you so much. As with most things, and especially given the financial pressures being felt at County level, it is the amazing work and generosity of spirit from fantastic volunteers that makes such an important difference. You people Rock!
